Habitat: swampy areas and shores of lakes and lagoons. Also in plowed and sown fields.

Length: 73 cms.
Head and neck yellowish ocráceo with crown and nape darker. Whiteskin chest separated from the neck by a gray line. Black chest and abdomen sides. Grayish brown back. Minor and medium white wing covers with dark gray edges; the largest grayish white. Black primaries Eyes, lorums and garganda nude black. Long beak curved down, black half basal and corneal the rest. Iris and legs red to pink.

With very characteristic shapes and colors, it is easily recognizable. It feeds on toads, tadpoles, earthworms, insects and other similar animals that it captures on the banks of lakes, lagoons or reservoirs. Also visit the plowed and planted fields, where it is easy to find a small separate flock.

Although it can be found from Antofagasta to Tierra del Fuego, it is a fairly common bird between Concepción (8th Region) and the south of the 10th Region, being a winter migratory species towards the northern part; and migratory summer to the southern part of its distribution area.

It nests in cracks or ledges of cliffs in the interior hills, coastal cliffs and trees. The nest is made of dry sticks and stems of grass, very bulky and poorly finished. The clutch consists of 2 to 3 eggs, with a whitish background with small light brown spots. Dimensions of 65 mm. x 44 mm. app .. The positions are between October and December, but towards the south end they can be delayed a bit.
