DESCRIPTION:
Length: 14-15 cms.
Male: Head gray with 3 black lines on either side leaving from the base of the beak to the neck. One at the height of the crown, another in the eyeline and the third in the line of the lower jaw. Crown feathers raised as a pompadour. Whitish throat. Great rufa spot around the neck except the dividing line between the throat and chest. Earthy tan chest. Whitish abdomen. Manto and brown back with black longitudinal lines. Brown tail. Legs and horn beak.
Like the sparrow (Passer domesticus), though slightly smaller and less massive, this bird is distinguished mainly by the large red stain rufescente or neck. It is a typical Chilean race, not being in any other country.
