DISTRIBUTION IN CHILE:
between the regions of Tarapaca and Atacama.

HABITAT:
Shores of lakes, ponds and wetlands; between 3,500 and 5,000 m.s.n.m.

DESCRIPTION:
Length: 18 cms.
White face and forehead, being separated from the crown and nape of cinnamon coffee color with a black strip that goes from eye to eye, having a little sideways. Brownish gray back. Front parts (chest, abdomen and undertail) white, with two inconspicuous chest straps; the upper and lower blackish gray to brownish. Black flight feathers with white secondary baseline, showing a spot of that color in flight. Black tail with white side tail feathers. Short black beak. Black legs.

The Puna plover inhabits lakes and lagoons of fresh and salt water from the Andes Mountains in Peru, Chile, Bolivia and northern Argentina at altitudes between 3,000 and 5,000 meters, even down to the coastal areas during the harsh winters where it is possible to observe in small groups because it is not concentrated in large flocks.

Nests in a cup on stony ground, where the eggs blend in perfectly.
