DISTRIBUTION IN CHILE:
between Arica and La Serena.
Records in the 8th and 11th regions.
HABITAT:
Edges of marshes and lakes, and coastal lagoons.
DESCRIPTION:
Length: 56 cms.
Adult: slaty blue plumage; violet dye in the head and neck. Bluish beak with a black tip. Blue-green legs.
Subadult: White stained blue. Bluish beak with a black tip.
Immature: White. Generally primary with black tip. Bluish beak with a black tip.
The Blue Heron (Egretta caerulea) is distributed in Chile only in the far north, in the province of Arica (Region XV), (Araya et al., 1998); however, some specimens have also been observed in the region of Antofagasta (Estades 1992) as well as in Atacama (C. Tala). The southernmost record of little blue heron for our country corresponds to the Saladita, Punta Teatinos, IV lagoon region as accidental sort of summer visitors
