This species is a seabird found on both coasts between the United States and the Amazon.
Its flight at low altitude above the water is characteristic of this species.

Pelecanus derives from the Greek Pelekanos = pelican, while its epithet occidentalis derives from Latin and refers to the western cardinal point.

It measures from 105 to 152 cm. Both sexes similar. It has an approximate weight of 3.5 kg and a peak of 280 to 348 mm. During the reproductive period it is mainly gray above with coffee in the neck and lower parts.
