It has 29 to 30 centimeters in total length and weighs approximately 110 grams. It has the shape of the typical kingfisher, with a short tail and long bill. It is olive green on top and head, with a crest.
The males have a white underside, reddish brown chest (wide band) and some greyish green stripes. The females have a white underside with green patches on the sides of the breast and green stripes.
Habitat:
It lives along rivers with slow and fast water flow zones and deep pools. It prefers brooks and rivers wide and clear. It is also common in lakes and mangrove edges.
Feeding:
It feeds on fish with a strong preference for those of the Characidae family. It also consumes some crustaceans such as Penaeus shrimp.
