It measures between 20 and 26 cm in length and its wingspan reaches between 34 and 42 cm.
The male has orange eyebrows and throat, with a black mask, crown, upper parts and band on the chest, the upper parts are black and the belly white; the wings are black with two orange bars and the tips of the orange flight feathers. The female has more dull coloration with olive, gray and brown tones.
