Familia: Bovidae
Subfamilia: Caprinae
Genero: Rupicapra
Nombre Cientifico: rupicapra

Local names: chamois, chamois, Camoscio, Gams

The Chamois of the Alps is similar in appearance to a goat and a little larger than a roe deer. It has a relatively long neck, long hairs on the back of the neck and on the back (especially in winter). This lock of hair is often used to decorate hats ("Gamsbart"). The coat is reddish brown in summer with a dark stripe along the back.
The males (40-50 kg) are wider in the chest and in the neck and are a little larger than the females (30-35 kg). The head-body length is from 1 to 1.3 m.

Habitat.
It inhabits in average and high mountain, in extensions of forest. In summer it ascends towards the alpine meadows, to shady slopes, often displaced towards heights raised by human pressure or by cattle. In winter it goes down to the sunny areas of the forest boundary.
It is present in the Cantabrian Mountains and in the Pyrenees.
