This species is distributed in southeastern Bolivia, west and south of Paraguay, the extreme south of Brazil, all of Uruguay and almost the entire continental territory of Argentina to the south of Argentine Patagonia, where its geonemia also overflows steppe territories of Chilean Patagonia.
It is the size of a domestic cat, black spots on the whole body, but the background color, usually brown, varies from region to region: in the north, the common is a yellowish brown; further south, the mantle is grayish. Melanism is common both in the wild and in captivity.
It measures about 60 cm in length plus 35 cm of tail, and 30 cm in height.
Its weight is usually between 4 and 5 kg, although it can reach 8 kg.
