Patagonia is a vast land located in the extreme south of the continent that stretches between 41°28′ and 55°59′ latitude south, shared by Chile and Argentina and only colonized at the end of the nineteenth century. With its magnificent natural scenery, Patagonia combines a history of both heroism and great effort. In this land, pioneers heroically fought against isolation, solitude, and climatic adversity to form the first settlements and start the social and economic development of the region.
Chilean Patagonia is formed by the province of Palena to the south of Puerto Montt, and the regions of Aysén and Magallanes, whose respective capitals are Coyhaique and Punta Arenas. The area of approximately 240 thousand km2 offers the opportunity to appreciate a great variety of natural landscapes, from the Patagonian pampas to the fjords and channels where the Andes submerge. Here you can also find historic remains of the last glaciation, like the Northern Ice Field, situated inside Parque Nacional Laguna San Rafael (Lake San Rafael National Park) and the Southern Ice Field in Magallanes.
