MAGDALENA ISLAND PENGUIN COLONY
Our tour starts from José Nogueira # 1255 which is in the center of Punta Arenas at 06:30 am where we will take a transport that will take us to Bahia Laredo pier, from there we will embark to go to Isla Magdalena located in the middle of the Strait of Magellan.
During the navigation we will be able to appreciate panoramic views of the rural area of the city, fishing cove, oil deposits, Tierra del Fuego Island among others, accompanied by birds such as Skua or Sailor, Cormorants and the majestic Black-browed Albatross, owner of the austral seas. It is also possible to spot southern dolphins that will play jumping around our boat.
After two hours of navigation, we will dock at Magdalena Island, Los Pinguinos Natural Monument, where more than 120,000 Magellanic penguins live together with a great variety of cormorants, southern gulls, southern pipils, carancas, skuas and even sea lions, a spectacular landscape in middle of Chilean Patagonia.
We walk the trails that go from the coast to the highest sector of the island, appreciating a few meters these birds and their nests, which begin to arrive at this island in mid-October to begin its reproduction, nesting and change of feathers, to then migrate north in mid-March.
In the highest sector of the Island is the Environmental Interpretation Center and Lighthouse, which we can access by climbing its steep stairs to have the most spectacular view of Magdalena Island and the Strait of Magellan. Entrance to Los Pinguinos Natural Monument included in the Tour.
