Route: 160 km. Departure: 9.30am. Return: 5.30 p.m. This park has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The glaciers that gave it its name - about 47 in all - show a world of 10,000 years ago: cold and wild. The most famous is the Perito Moreno Glacier, located at the extreme south-west of Lake Argentino, 80 km away. from El Calafate.
The glacier is named after the great Argentine explorer of the last century, and is one of the few in the advancing world. This has made it one of the largest natural spectacles in South America. Every now and then, his 60m forehead. high, it gives off large ice walls like buildings that fall into the waters of the Rico Arm or the Iceberg Channel, and then navigate the Canal towards the main body of the lake. But that is not all. As the glacier advances, it approaches the Magallanes Peninsula, on the opposite bank of the lake and a point in the sector of walkways and viewpoints. The cycle takes 4 to 6 years and ends by dividing the lake in two. The Brazo Rico is dammed and rises above its level by approximately 35 m. The waters slowly pierce a tunnel in front of the glacier until pressure causes it to collapse. The show is indescribable. The waters rush in gigantic waves, and then start the whole process again.
