Located in the XI Region, General Carrera Province, Commune of Chile Chico, has an area of 178,400 hectares. It is the largest lake in Chile, even though it is shared with Argentina. The banks are very eroded and strong winds predominate that make navigation dangerous even to larger vessels. It has a total area of 97,000 Ha and 200 km. long. The lake drains first to Lake Bertrand and then to the Baker River, which is the largest in Chile.
How to get:
On the Austral road, 279 km. south of Coihiaque, the mouth of the lake is located, where there are very comfortable cabins as well as Lake Bertrand. It can also be reached by crossing by barge between Pto. Ibañez and Chile Chico, then following a path that develops along the steep south bank and that surprises by the layout and the cliffs. It can also be reached from Argentina (Perito Moreno and Los Antiguos) by the passage of Chile Chico.
Information to the tourist:
To fish on board you must be near the drain, where you can take pieces of between 5 kg. and 10 kg., you must be very careful with the wind and currents. In Lake Bertrand and the Baker River there are plenty of pools and banks suitable for practicing any form of fly fishing.
This entire area has a large number of Parks and National Reserves, ranging from the town of La Junta near the Palena Lake National Reserve, Lake Rosselot National Reserve, Cinco Hermanas Monument, Simpson River National Park, among others, to the town of Villa Ohiggins close to the Shoe National Reserve, so we recommend these great natural attractions, worth visiting.
